For some anglers, there are many different types of fishing, techniques and styles. Whether it’s fishing as a sport, for commercial purposes or just relaxing on a boat and fishing, here are some commonly practiced fishing techniques in Indonesia:
- 1. Bottom Fishing Technique
The bottom fishing technique is the most common fishing technique applied by anglers in the sea, rivers, jetties, swamps, reservoirs to fish ponds. To fish with this technique, you just simply drop the bait to the bottom of the sea where it is indicated that there are corals and fish. After dropping the bait, you just need to wait for the fish to grab the bait, the bait used is in the form of live bait such as shrimp, squid, small fish and so on. For bottom fishing rig, you can tie lead sinker to the end of the line so that the bait sinks easily and helps keep it from being carried away by the current. This method is a simple fishing method and requires patience. In addition to using sinker, lines and hooks, anglers can also use bottom fishing rods and bottom fishing reels. This technique generally targets bottom fish such as grouper, snapper and sweet lip emperor.
- 2. Jigging Fishing Technique
Jigging fishing technique is one of the most commonly used fishing techniques for sport fishing. This technique is also very suitable for fishing for big fish such as giant monster groupers and other fish. Many professional anglers consider the jigging technique to provide a greater chance of targeting the fish being caught, this technique is easier to use for fishing to catch dog tooth tuna, bottom fish, ruby snappers and so on. This technique uses an artificial metal jig as a lure where there are three types of metal jigs. The jig used depends on the conditions, depth, current and selection of a good jig color. The feathers are combination of feathers such as chicken feathers, sabiki, synthetic feathers with various colors. The color of the feathers also affects the success of feathering fishing. This technique is usually applied with a handline technique or with bottom techniques.
- 4. Hand-line Fishing Technique
Handline fishing technique is the most widely used fishing technique by fishermen in Indonesia. This technique is almost the same as the bottom and feathering fishing technique but this technique does not use a rod or reel. This technique is the oldest fishing technique not only in Indonesia but also throughout the world. This technique uses only a line and sinker with the line pulled and then rolled up in a simple roller made of plastic or other material. The bait used is generally live bait and also feathers. The handline technique is generally applied from the boat and always successful catching the fish. If the reasons you are not catching a fish, it’s happen because of generally due to the wrong spot and not being on the right time to fish.
- 5. Casting Fishing Technique
Casting fishing technique is one of the fishing techniques that is very often used because it can be applied in many places such as near the beach, rivers, swamps, lakes to jetties. This technique aims to throw casting baits in the form of minnow bait, crankbait, mini popper, spinner bait, squid jig, cast jig, swimbait, jig head, to soft lures such as jump frogs, worms and so on at a certain distance and play the lure by retrieval rhythm or reeling the line with a certain rhythm, so that the action lure appears as if it were a target bait. This technique uses a long casting rod combined with a casting fishing reel, both spinning reel and baitcasting reel (BC). The reels used for casting are generally ultralight fishing reels, but many also medium reels. The casting rod is used longer so that the distance to throw the lure is longer. The fish target for casting fishing depends on the lure used, generally barramundi, snakehead, mangrove jack, grouper fish and so on.
- 6. Popping Fishing Technique
Popping fishing technique is one of the popular fishing techniques for GT (giant trevally) fishing. This fish is one of the most sought after fish by anglers. The method of popping fishing is to throw top water lures or popper lures made of wood or plastic into fishing spots where there are indicated GT fish such as around coral rocks in the sea, shallow reefs, sea cliffs or drop offs and so on. Popper bait is divided into three forms, namely chugger with an open mouth, stickbait and pencil forms. After throwing the popper, the angler needs to reel the line and jerk the rod to make the popper bait produce splashes of water and a pop sound to attract fish to grab. Not only GT fish, this technique can also be used for other fish such as tuna. The fishing tackles used are also specially designed such as popping rods and popping reels which have a larger ratio and corrosion resistant.
- 7. Trolling Fishing Technique
Trolling fishing technique is a fishing technique in the sea where fishing lines with trolling lures in the form of trolling minnows, live baits such as cob, konahead, swimbait and so on which are installed in trolling fishing tackles that are specially designed for trolling such as trolling reels which are generally in the form of overhead (OH) reels and trolling rods or overhead (OH) rod. The installed bait then pulled behind the boat at a certain speed. This technique is commonly used in recreational fishing. This technique is very effective for catching large pelagic predatory fish such as yellowfin tuna, Spanish mackerel, wahoo, mahi-mahi, Marlin, Sail Fish and so on.
- 8. Eging Technique
The Eging technique is one of the squid & cuttlefish fishing techniques that is currently very popular among anglers. Currently, fishing equipment manufacturers have also made special products for squid fishing such as squid fishing rods. This squid fishing technique is combined with a casting technique where the angler throws squid lures in the form of a squid jig to a certain distance and plays it by retrieving the line and occasionally jerking the rod so as to make the bait seem to run away from predators who are hunting it. The action of the bait will attract the squid or cuttlefish to grab it. The color of the squid bait and also the right time for squid fishing also greatly affects the success of squid fishing. The squid jig also has several types depending on the conditions in which you are fishing.
- 9. Live-bait Fishing Technique
Live-bait fishing technique is a fishing technique using live bait in the form of fish that were catching alive. Then the bait is attached to a hook without sinker and then released back into the sea. For fishing with this technique is very good at FADs, shallow reefs in the middle of the sea and where there are indications that pelagic fish are hunting for bait, which is characterized by the abundance of small fish near the surface or birds that are preying on fish.
